A Thing Called Fashion

Affordable Sustainable Fashion Brands in India

There was a time when you had to be from the affluent class to head to an organic/ eco-friendly clothing brand and be able to invest in something that is sustainable. With change in surroundings and betterment of the environment people are learning and shifting to organic and sustainable living. Fashion is the biggest industry that caught the fastest route to organic fashion.

There is a long list of brands that are sustainable and organic but there are only few that are reachable to the middle class/ salaried consumers. Ethical fashion has been trending in some way or the other and not just for environmental well being. All brands have a different story regarding the change in the shift from fast fashion to an organic brand.

For people who don’t understand what organic/ethical/sustainable fashion is – let me put in points :

It pays attention to and manages the human impact on the environment for fashion, allowing for indefinite production, in harmony with nature. Here’s how it does that:

  • Provides workers with humane rights and working conditions
  • Discourages and reduces the use of chemicals, using natural dyes
  • Uses Eco-friendly fabrics
  • Saves water
  • Champions recycling and use of sustainable energy sources
  • Acts as a guardian for animal rights
  • Zero Wastage Policy

Keeping all that in mind, I have listed out affordable brands that follow and believe in the same.

  • Howrah Bridge

This brand is close to my heart because it’s my dearest friend Anupriya aka Styleprism’s baby. The entrepreneur is multi-talented and has left no stone unturned. Zero wastage policy is the most trendiest segment of Howrah Bridge other than her quirky apparels made out of Indian hand loom. Howrah Bridge provides fair wages and good working conditions for their workers. They make clothes that are comfortable, stylish, irrespective of current trends so that they can be worn for many years thus reducing the customer’s fast buying needs.

  • KhadiCult

“The brand Khadi Cult, a sustainable clothing label was launched with a mission to weave a new story on a fabric which held a lot of national importance – KHADI. With a sole objective of making Khadi highly acceptable to a younger audience, she decided to bring a refreshing twist to the fabric by introducing quirky prints and fun cuts to the heritage fabric.” – KhadiCult

  • Okhai

An Indian artisan led fashion brand that empowers tribal women. Okhai products offer contemporary designs, all reasonably priced. Proceeds from sales help these artisans help themselves – Okhai’s mission is to encourage women from less privileged backgrounds to acquire new skills; to give them the self-confidence and self-esteem required to earn by their own industry and initiative; and to enable them to carry this newly discovered skill and confidence into the wider world. Okhai understands the rich culture and traditions that these rural communities are steeped in and translates this heritage into products by pairing traditional art with contemporary designs and modern processes.

  1. So, I was doing a research about sustainable fashion brands and most of the brands I found were foreign brands with high budget or high shipping charges. This came in handy for me. I can’t thank you enough for this resource ❤
